How to Change a Dog's Collar

A dog's collar is an important part of their wardrobe. Not only does it help to identify them, but it also provides a place to attach their leash for walks. But just like our clothes, sometimes our dogs outgrow their collars and need a bigger size. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to change your dog's collar.

  1. Measure your dog's neck. The best way to do this is by using a flexible tape measure or a string that you can then measure later. For most dogs, you'll want the collar to be about 2 inches smaller than their neck so that it fits snugly but isn't too tight.
  2. Choose a new collar. There are lots of different types of collars out there, so take some time to find one that you like and that will also be comfortable for your dog to wear. Be sure to double check the size before you buy it!
  3. Put the new collar on your dog. This part is usually pretty easy, especially if you have a treat handy. Just slip the collar over their head and adjust it to the appropriate size.
  4. Attach the leash. Once the collar is in place, all that's left to do is clip on the leash and you're ready to go!
5A. If your dog has an ID tag... If your dog has an ID tag with their name and your contact information on it, great! You can just transfer that over to the new collar. But if they don't have one yet, now is a good time to get one made up. That way, if they ever get lost, whoever finds them will know how to reach you quickly and easily.

  5. Enjoy your walk! With the new collar in place, you and your furry friend are ready to hit the streets (or trails) and enjoy some quality time together.
